Chapter Six

That’s not my alarm.

The knowledge broke through the haze of sleep and Chance cracked open his eyes with sleepy confusion. His alarm was the standard series of repetitive beeps, but this sounded like sonar from a submarine. It continued to ring and showed no signs of stopping. Someone was snoring from behind his neck and an arm was draped firmly around his waist.

Angel.

Chance smiled as he remembered the last night and how amazing it had been. He wished he could stay and experience a lazy day with Angel, but he had to work. And I doubt he’ll want me to remain, anyway.

He tried to shift out of his lover’s arms, but Angel mumbled a protest and clung tighter. Chance kept trying but ended up on his back with Angel holding on to him like a teddy bear. Angel looked so innocent in sleep. His hair was falling against his forehead and his lips were parted. He’d kicked the blankets off during the night and most of his back and one of his legs was on display. Looking at him like this, Chance could see why he’d been given such an angelic name.

Running a hand through his lover’s hair, Chance enjoyed the way Angel leaned into the touch. He hated having to wake him, but time was ticking away and the alarm was continuing to blare. Chance lightly shook Angel’s shoulder.

“Angel,” he murmured, unable to keep all the fondness from his voice. “I have to get up. You need to let me go.”

Angel gave a sound of protest and squeezed him tighter, but it was only for a moment before his eyes opened. They were bleary at first, but with a few blinks he seemed to come awake.

“Chance,” he greeted, a soft smile forming. “Morning.”

“Good morning,” Chance replied.

He gave in to the temptation to stroke Angel’s hair again. Angel rewarded him by nuzzling into his chest and closing his eyes.

“It would be better if the alarm wasn’t going off,” Angel mumbled.

“It’s only doing that because I still need to get up,” Chance pointed out.

“Call in sick,” Angel said. “It’s almost Christmas. No one will care.”

“I think many people will care,” Chance disagreed. “I also need to finish all my work before we close up.”

“It won’t go anywhere for two weeks,” Angel argued. “Just ignore it.”

Chance chuckled. “I don’t know how you manage events if this is your response to administrative tasks.”

“I focus on the important things,” Angel said, “like how you need more sex with me in your schedule.”

Chance snorted. “Is that right?”

“Yes,” Angel said, and he started sneaking a hand down Chance’s chest toward his pants. “You need a better work-sex balance.”

Chance rolled his eyes and stilled Angel’s hand. “We can change that tonight, but right now, I need to go to work.”

Angel sighed, but he seemed to realize Chance was serious as he stopped protesting. He also rolled away from Chance to turn off the alarm. Chance missed his warmth but refused to follow after him. Angel sat on the edge of the mattress and rubbed his face.
